It’s a common and frustrating situation: your marketing is bringing people to your website, but the phone still isn’t ringing the way you’d expect. Before assuming the marketing itself is the problem, it’s worth looking at what happens after someone lands on your site — because that’s often where the real leak is.
Page Speed Is a Silent Conversion Killer
A slow-loading page doesn’t just annoy visitors — a meaningful share of them leave before it even finishes loading. Google’s own research has repeatedly shown that as load time increases, the likelihood of a visitor leaving (known as “bounce”) increases sharply alongside it, particularly on mobile. If your site takes several seconds to load on a phone, you may be losing customers who never saw a single word of your copy.
Your Phone Number and CTA Aren’t Where People Actually Look
It sounds almost too simple to matter, but it consistently does: if your phone number isn’t visible without scrolling, or your “Book Now” / “Get a Quote” button is buried below several paragraphs of text, you’re adding friction at the exact moment someone was ready to act. Most local business visitors are looking to do one of a few things quickly — call, request a quote, or check hours — and each one of those should be reachable within a second or two of landing on the page.
Mobile Experience Gaps
The majority of local searches happen on a phone, often when someone is already out and about, deciding where to go right now. A site that looks fine on desktop but has cramped text, hard-to-tap buttons, or a form that’s difficult to fill out on mobile is turning away the exact audience most likely to become a customer today.
Confusing or Missing Trust Signals
Visitors decide very quickly whether a business feels credible. A site with no reviews visible, no photos of real work or real people, and no clear indication of where you’re located or how long you’ve been in business is asking someone to take a leap of faith they may not be willing to make. This doesn’t require a full rebuild — even a small, visible cluster of reviews or a couple of real photos can meaningfully change how trustworthy a page feels.
A Simple Self-Audit You Can Run Today
Open your own website on your phone, on mobile data (not wifi), as if you were a stranger: - How long did it take to load? - Could you find your phone number in the first five seconds? - Is it obvious what you want the visitor to do next? - Does anything on the page make you trust this business, specifically?
If you hesitate on any of those, your actual customers likely do too.
